Share-Care

Share-care arrangements have become a growing trend among Bay Area families. They give parents the opportunity to create a quality childcare arrangement that fits the family budget.

Share care arrangements can come about in four ways.

  1. You and another parent work alternating hours and days. One parent cares for the children on her days off. Cost: free.
  2. Two families share a nanny. Childcare is for both children on the same days at the same time in either one or both parents’ home. Cost: $8-9/hr. per family
  3. Two families split the nanny’s time. Each child has individual care in their own homes. Cost: $13-15/hr per family
  4. A caregiver brings her own child to the family’s home. Cost: $10-13/hr for the family.
There are some challenges in creating share care arrangements.

  1. Managing the logistics of when and where care will be.
  2. Providing adequate reimbursement to maintain the children’s play space where care is provided
  3. Providing adequate equipment, toys, food, bottles, diapers and clothing items in one or both homes
  4. Agreeing on how the children will be cared for. Both parents and caregiver need to share similar values and to understand their differences-- for a successful arrangement to occur.
  5. Developing a contract between each family and nanny defining the terms of the working relationship.
